Diabetes Health Type 1 & 2: How to Fast Safely During Ramadan with DiabetesDiabetes Health Type 1 & 2: How to Fast Safely During Ramadan with Diabetes

Managing diabetes is no easy task. When a spiritual holiday comes along that requires fasting, you need to ensure that your health is not compromised.

Join me as I speak to Dr. Luma Gahlib who helps us understand who should or should not fast during Ramadan and what to consider before you decide to observe this spiritual holiday that may affect your health.

First and foremost- speak to your healthcare professional to ensure you can fast safely. For instance, if you take insulin during meals, you need to ask your healthcare professional how much insulin, if any, you should take when fasting. What about when you break your fast after dusk? Let your healthcare professional know what types of foods you are planning to eat. This will help them determine how many units of rapid acting insulin you may need to cover your meal.

Dr. Gahlib’s answers are sure to illuminate all who listen to her sage advice.

For those of you who observe Ramadan- I wish you the best of health

Note: Ramadan starts on Monday April 12th and ends Wednesday  May 12th.

The federal government has taken a big first step at becoming involved in the growing nationwide controversy over soaring insulin prices. And it’s one that will have a significant impact on seniors with diabetes who rely on Medicare for their insulin prescriptions: As of January 2021, Medicare enrollees who have been paying $ 105 in copayments  a month’s for insulin will now be asked to make a $ 35 copayment for their insulin prescription.  That’s a 66-percent reduction in direct costs to the 3 million people on Medicare who need insulin.

Seniors with diabetes who are enrolled in Medicare will enjoy an average annual savings of $ 446 in insulin costs.

The White House, in adding details to its Part D Senior Saving Model that was first announced in March, says that as of late May the program has already attracted 88 health insurers representing 1,750 plans.

Three of the biggest insulin suppliers to U.S. consumers, Eli Lilly, Sanofi, and Novo Nordisk, have all agreed  to increase the discounts they offer for their respective insulin brands.

This won’t be the last we hear about federal attempts to rein in insulin costs, which have increased 200 percent over the past 10 years. Congress has recently begun discussing the high price of insulins as well as various state legislatures.

Diabetes Health in The News Podcast: Eli Lilly Announces a Generic Insulin at Half the Price of Their Most Popular Brand

If you have been struggling with insulin prices, compromising your over health because you cannot afford your medication, Today Eli Lilly is offering you some relief, a new generic insulin on the market at half the price of their most popular brand.

The lower-priced version will be called Insulin Lispro—the same molecule as Humalog—and will be available in vial and pen options. The list price of a single vial will be $ 137.35. The list price of a five-pack of KwikPens will be $ 265.20. Vials and pens of the lower-priced insulin have been manufactured, and Lilly will now work with supply chain partners to make them available in pharmacies as quickly as possible. It will be made available as an authorized generic through a Lilly subsidiary, ImClone Systems. Humalog will also remain available for people who want to continue accessing it through their current insurance plans. Introducing an alternative insulin option allows Lilly to provide a lower-priced insulin more quickly while providing payers time to renegotiate downstream contracts and adjust to new system economics.

If you have Medicare D, this will help with your coverage gap.

If you have any question, call the Lilly Diabetes Solution Center at (833) 808-1234 to learn whether Lilly’s Insulin Lispro, or another option, is the best financial choice for you.
